This page explains how to submit your case. It's really easy, even if you only have basic IT skills it should not take more than 5--10 minutes. These are the steps to follow:

Contents

Get your case information to hand

What you will need to have at a minimum:

  • Your surname and the year the case started (this will make the case title)
  • The amount that was disputed
  • The name of the bank that issued your card
  • the sort of card you held (e.g. credit/debit/current account)
  • how long it was before you discovered the theft
  • The level of action that you took (e.g. phone call, written compliant, court action)
  • The outcome of the case (put "Unresolved" if you are still in dispute).

Ideally you should also try and record:

  • the number of disputed withdrawals
  • the locations (approximate or exact) where the disputed withdrawals took place
  • the names of the "acquiring banks" (these are the banks that own the cash machine where the dispute took place)
  • the history of your PIN (e.g. did you keep your original issued PIN, or change it when you opened your account?)

Prepare a new page

  • Open a new window in your browser, and go to the Example Case page.
  • Keep this guide up in the other window beside you.
  • Now, 'change the name in the address bar to display your case name. For example, if your name is John Smith, and the dispute started in 2007, then change the bar to read:
http://www.phantomwithdrawals.com/2007_Smith_Case

  • Use the underscore '_' symbol for spaces in the case name
  • Now you should see a page that says "There is currently no text in this page" -- this is good, it means you have a blank page to start with.
  • Now click the link on the blank page marked edit this page
  • Copy and paste the following template into your page:
Key Facts
{|
| Amount stolen || (replace this text with amount)
|-
| Number of Withdrawals || (replace with number of withdrawals)
|-
| ATM Locations                || (etc...)
|-

Case Details
* List case details here with bullet points.
* On day 1 this happened.
* On day 2 I wrote a letter etc. etc.

Fill out the details of your case

  • Now fill out the template with the information you have collected, and summarise the story of your case with a few bullet points under the section marked "Case Details".
  • Be sure to read the Case Style Guide for a quick list of do's and don'ts about what to write. For example, you should not use your case history to direct abuse at your bank, even if you are frustrated, and you should not (for your own safety) include details such as the card number or your home address.
  • If you get stuck or confused, open a fresh browser window, and look at another case from the Case List page and click the "edit" button on that page to have a look at how they did it. Be sure not to save changes on another person's case though!
  • Once you are done, click the "Save page" button at the bottom of the edit window. Your page is now added to the Wiki.

Add your case to the case list

  • All that remains is to add your case to the new case list.
  • If you are uncertain about doing this step, you can just skip it and within a few days, another site member will see your new case, and add it to the main list.
  • If you want to do this yourself, bring up the Case List page, and click the

edit button. Copy and paste the last line of the case list, and change it to contain your details. Give your case the next highest number on the list. For example, if the case list ends with the following text:

18 / 2004 O'Flaherty Case / 16/12/04 / £490 / Resolved
19 / 2004 Fomfer Case / 15/12/04 / USD200 / Resolved

20 / 2004 Graham Case / 06/08/04 / £6,850 / Unresolved
21 / 2005 Sexton Case / 25/10/05 / £200 / Unresolved

  • Then to add the John Smith example case from above, you add the line
22 / 2007 Smith Case / Jan 2007 / £1234 / Unresolved

  • Note: be sure to make all of your text line up with the rest of the cases, especially including the white space before the case number, which is important for the wiki formatting.
  • Click the "Save page" button and the case list index should now be saved with a link to your newly added case. Give the link a try.
  • That's it! Don't worry if you get it wrong. In the worst case, just give up, and the great thing about Wikis is that they keep a history of all the previous versions of pages. This means an administrator can restore the site to how it used to be before you made the mistake. You should then maybe think about using the Basic Case Submission method to document your case instead.
